Moss turning brown in a terrarium: the causes
Moss yellowing, browning in patches or blackening in the middle: how to identify the cause, what can be recovered and what will never green up again.

Terrarium moss that turns brown almost always has one of four causes: too little light, air that is too dry, a floor that stays permanently soaked, or water that is too hard. The look of the moss tells you which. The parts that have already browned will not green up again, but once the cause is corrected the moss grows on from its tips and covers the dead areas within a few weeks.

Not enough light
This is the most common cause, and the least obvious: the moss does not die suddenly, it fades out. The green first loses its intensity, turns greyish, then brown, fairly evenly over the whole surface.
Mosses do not ask for much light, but they ask for it every day. A terrarium sitting on a cabinet at the back of a room, far from any window, receives almost none. Move it closer to a bright window — out of direct sun, which would cook the terrarium — or set up a small grow lamp at a distance, six to eight hours a day.
Air too dry
Dry moss is brown on the surface, brittle under the finger, and the glass no longer carries any mist in the morning. That is the sign of a terrarium drying out, often because the lid no longer seals or because it sits too close to a source of heat.
Rehydrate in small bursts, aiming at the substrate, close it again, and check for mist the next day. The full procedure is in Terrarium too dry.

A soaked floor
The opposite happens too, and it is more serious. Moss standing permanently in water rots from underneath: it goes soft and blackish, lifts away in patches, and a stagnant smell usually comes with it.
Moss needs humidity in the air, not a waterlogged floor. Air it for a few hours a day, draw the standing water off the bottom with a pipette, and stop watering — see Terrarium too humid. If a smell has already set in, My terrarium smells bad sets out the procedure.
Hard water
Moss watered with tap water in a hard-water area gradually acquires a whitish deposit, which smothers it and turns it a washed-out green and then brown. The same deposit leaves marks on the glass.
Switch to rainwater or deionised water. The deposit already there will not wash off, but the new growth will be clean.
What can be recovered, and what cannot
Never greens up again: a brown part is dead. No treatment brings it back.
Always grows back once the cause is corrected: moss grows on from its tips. Within two to four weeks, clear green appears at the edges and gains on the dead area.
Should the brown be removed? If it is dry and brittle, leave it: the new growth will cover it, and pulling it away tears out the living moss with it. If it is soft, black and wet, cut it out with scissors: in an enclosed environment, decomposing matter feeds mould.
Starting again with fresh moss
When more than half the surface is dead, it is quicker to lay a fresh sheet than to wait for recovery. Take out the old moss, scrape the surface of the substrate lightly, and lay the new sheet following the method in How to lay moss in a terrarium — firm contact is what decides whether it takes.
