The words of living things, explained simply. One word per line, and what it changes for you.

Activated charcoal: A thin layer placed on top of the drainage. It traps odours and limits stagnant water.
Aquascaping: The art of composing an underwater landscape: stones, wood and plants arranged like a scene.

Bioactive: A living soil: springtails and woodlice eat the waste in it. A bioactive terrarium cleans itself.

Carboy: A large glass container with a narrow neck. A classic for closed terrariums, built using long tweezers.
Closed terrarium: A covered jar where water runs in a cycle. It's rarely opened.
Condensation: The mist on the glass. A light haze in the morning is a good sign; opaque glass means too much water.

Drainage: The bottom layer, made of clay balls. Excess water drains down into it, away from the roots.

Hardness (GH / KH): The amount of minerals in the water. Shrimp are sensitive to it, plants much less so.
Humidity: The moisture level of the air. High in a closed terrarium, low in an open one.
Hydroponics: Growing without soil, roots in enriched water. Faster, cleaner, more technical.

Java moss: An easy aquatic moss that attaches to wood and shelters shrimp.

Melliferous: A flower rich in nectar and pollen, which feeds bees and butterflies.
Microgreens: Young shoots cut at ten days. Lots of flavour, very little space needed.

Nitrogen cycle: Bacteria convert waste into nitrates. A new tank needs to go through this cycle before its first inhabitants move in.

Open terrarium: Without a lid, for plants that want dry air: succulents and cacti.

PAR / spectrum: What the lamp actually gives the plant. Watts say almost nothing about it.
Photoperiod: The number of hours of light per day. 12 to 14 h for most indoor crops.

Sphagnum moss: Dried moss that holds a lot of water. It's used as a growing medium for carnivorous plants.
Substrate: The terrarium's soil, or the technical substrate in a tank. It feeds and anchors the roots.
