Closed tropical kits: our advice
The closed terrarium kit, for understorey plants
A closed terrarium keeps its water. It evaporates from the substrate, settles as mist on the glass, then falls back. Tropical understorey plants like this humid air and soft light: fittonia, fern, calathea, coffee plant. A closed tropical kit brings together the container with its stopper, the layers of fill and plants that all need the same thing.
What to know before you choose
Place a closed terrarium in a bright room, never in direct sun: under glass, heat builds up very quickly. Watering is rare. Light mist in the morning is a good sign; glass that runs with water all day means the jar should be opened for a few hours.
The size of the container decides the rest: a narrow-necked bottle is planted with long tweezers, a wide jar by hand. The guide Which terrarium size to choose helps you decide. Afterwards, keep How to care for a closed terrarium to hand and, for the first weeks, the guide on mould.
FAQ
Questions about closed tropical kits
Does a closed tropical terrarium need watering?
Rarely. The jar recycles its water. Check the substrate near the roots before adding any, and do not water soil that is still damp.
Can a closed terrarium stay far from a window?
No. Glass keeps in humidity, not light. Without bright, indirect light the stems stretch and turn pale. An LED stopper helps in a dark room.
