- Black — a dark band at the base of the terrarium.
Why a drainage layer
In a closed terrarium, water has nowhere to go. Without a drainage layer, it stays in contact with the soil and the roots end up rotting. The gravel stores it at the bottom, out of reach of the roots, and it slowly evaporates within the closed cycle.
How to use it
- Pour a 2 to 4 cm layer at the bottom of the jar or bottle, before anything else
- Spread the gravel evenly so the water circulates across the whole base
- Add a thin layer of activated charcoal on top, then the potting soil

Why choose white gravel over black?
