Furniture: our advice
Putting plants at the right height
A plant on the floor often gets less light than it would at 60 or 80 cm high, near the window. That is the first job of the shop's furniture: bringing the plant closer to the light and freeing up the floor.
- Plant stands: low or tall models, sized to the pot's diameter. Measure the pot at its base before choosing.
- Rolling plant caddies: for a large, heavy pot that you move for cleaning or to follow the sun.
- Side tables: a surface for a plant and an object, next to an armchair or a bed.
- Racks and test-tube stands: for rooting cuttings in water and watching the roots grow.
- Plant hangers: a pulley lets you lower a hanging plant to water it, then raise it again.
Check the load
A 25 cm pot filled with moist potting compost quickly weighs 8 to 10 kg. Check the load stated on the product page, and put a saucer under the pot to protect the wood.
For the pots themselves, see Pots & compost.
FAQ
Questions about furniture
Which stand should I choose for my pot?
Measure the diameter of the pot at its base: the stand's top must be the same size or slightly wider. A tall stand suits a trailing plant, a low one suits a large plant.
Does a rolling plant caddy damage parquet floors?
Rubber castors roll without marking a clean parquet floor. Always put a saucer under the pot: water running out damages wood more than castors do.
