Luxury terrarium: what makes a high-end piece

A luxury terrarium is not recognised by its price. It is recognised by five things: the glass, the size, the planting, the moss and the time it takes to make. And by what it does not pretend to be.

Kit Prisme canopée : grand terrarium géométrique en verre à facettes, planté d'un palmier, de fougères et de mousse vivante

A luxury terrarium is a garden under glass that you look at as a work of art. It sits in a room like a sculpture. But this sculpture grows.

The word "luxury" is often used to sell anything. So here are five criteria you can check yourself, on a photo or on a product page.

1. The glass is assembled by hand

This is the first sign. A mass-produced jar comes out of a mould, by the thousand. A high-end geometric terrarium is made of flat glass panels, cut and then assembled one by one.

Our terrariums in the Prisme collection are assembled by hand in Europe, in glass and silicone. Small differences from one piece to the next are normal: no two pieces are exactly the same. Our guide to the handmade terrarium explains how to recognise this work.

2. Size changes everything

A small terrarium is a trinket. A large terrarium is a presence in the room. From 30 cm long, you can plant in three layers: a tall plant, medium plants, a carpet at ground level. This depth is what gives the impression of a landscape.

The largest of our geometric terrariums measures 31 × 29 × 29 cm. The longest measures 50 cm.

3. The planting is dense

A standard terrarium holds two or three plants. A high-end piece holds five or six, chosen to go together: one plant for height, broad foliage in the centre, colour at ground level.

Dense does not mean cramped. Each plant must keep room to grow. Our guide to plants for a geometric terrarium gives the right pairings.

4. The moss is alive

Living moss is the detail that sets a beautiful terrarium apart from an ordinary one. It forms green hills between the plants. It holds moisture. It changes shade with the light.

Our Prisme kits come with cushions of living moss, Leucobryum glaucum, 8 to 15 cm across. Our guide to living or preserved moss explains the difference.

5. It is made for you

A luxury object does not sleep in a warehouse. Our geometric terrariums are made to order, in small quantities. Yours ships within 1 to 2 weeks.

This wait is part of the object. If you are giving it as a gift, order early: our guide to the premium terrarium gift gives the timetable.

What luxury is not

We prefer to say it plainly.

  • These are not rare plants. Fittonia, fern, coffee plant, calathea: these are well-known plants, chosen because they live well under glass.
  • It is not a signature piece. Our terrariums are not signed by a designer.
  • It is not a ready-planted terrarium. You receive a complete kit and you plant it yourself, in about an hour. That is part of the pleasure.

The real luxury: almost nothing to do

A closed terrarium recycles its own water. Once planted, it asks for very little.

  • Bright light, without direct sun.
  • Watering once or twice a year.
  • The glass panel removed for a few hours, once a month.

The details are in our guide to caring for a closed terrarium.

An object that gains with time

A vase or a lamp does not change. A terrarium does. During the first months, the plants settle in and the moss spreads. After a year, the landscape is fuller than on the day you built it. It is one of the few decorative objects that improve after you buy them.

In short

  1. Look at the glass: assembled by hand, or moulded in a series.
  2. Look at the size: 30 cm and more for a true landscape.
  3. Count the plants: five or six, at three heights.
  4. Look for living moss.
  5. Accept the wait: it proves the piece is made for you.

Frequently asked questions

What sets a luxury terrarium apart from a standard one?

Five things: hand-assembled glass, a large size, dense planting, living moss, and made-to-order manufacture. A standard terrarium is a mass-produced jar, filled with two or three plants.

Does a high-end terrarium need more care?

No. A closed terrarium needs very little, whatever its range: bright light without direct sun, watering once or twice a year, and the panel removed for a few hours once a month.

Are the plants in a luxury terrarium rare?

No, and that is better. A closed terrarium needs plants that like humidity and stay small: fittonia, fern, coffee plant, calathea, moss. These are well-known, hardy plants. The value comes from the composition and the glass.

How long does a made-to-order terrarium take to arrive?

Our geometric terrariums are made to order, by hand, in Europe. They ship within 1 to 2 weeks.
